1 (4 oz) pkg Bakers German Sweet Baking Chocolate
1/2 cup water
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or oleo, softened
4 egg yolks, 4 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup buttermilk, room temp

Line bottoms of 3 9 inch cake pans with waxed paper
Or I use one 9 x 12 baking dish and one 9 x 9 inch baking dish, greasing
bottoms of dishes and then flour bottoms
Microwave broken up chocolate and water in large microwavable bowl
on high 2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted, stirring halfway through
heating time. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Set aside til cool.
Mix flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Separate eggs
Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with mixer on medium speed until
light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture, alternately, with
buttermilk. Beating after each addition, until smooth.
Beat egg whites in another large bowl with mixer on high speed until stiff
peaks form. Gently stir into batter until well mixed. Divide among prepared pans.
Bake at 350 degrees 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean
Cool 15 minutes before removing from 9 inch pans. Run a knife between
cakes and sides of pans
9 x 12 pan and 9 x 9 pan, do not remove cakes from pans, frost directly over
cakes in pans
