1 1/2 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. molasses
4 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cardamon
1 c. butter
1/2 c. dark syrup
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. anise extract
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. pepper
6 -7 cups flour

Soften butter and mix sugar and eggs. Add flour (dough must be stiff). Make into logs one inch diameter. Chill over night. Cut off into1 inch pieces. Bake. 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Drop into powdered sugar. Store in airtight container. The spices become more flavorful as time goes on. Make around Thanksgiving time to enjoy for Christmas.

Wilma Ritche would make these cookies and send them to us where ever we lived. Andy would call them "rocks" because they were hard. They are good with coffee in the morning.
