Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Picture: My Paternal Grandmother Harriett Bell Varney Miller's High School Dance Senior Picture. Harriett as born in October 1896 and died March 12, 1971. Her parents were Charles E. Varney (1849 - 1907) from Gloucester and Emma M. (Lowe) Varney (1864 - 1954) from Rockport. They married in 1881.

My grandmother died when I was 3 years old,so I don't remember her well. I do remember that she was very kind and soft mannered. She lived in an apartment that overlooked the beach in Beverly, MA, had a large rag doll and a tea set. My father said that her mother, Emma was extremely loving and only spoke positively about people. Emma used to say "Kindness is to do and say the kindest thing in the kindest way."

Per my father Bruce Miller:
My great grandfather Charles F. Varney had the chance to buy large parcels of land on Rocky Neck in Gloucester. This area is now the art colony, and a small lot of land is worth $40,000 to $50,000 (in 1985). Most of Rocky Nick could have been purchased by my grandfather for $600. He felt that the land was unsutable for sheep grazing or farming, so it was not a good investment. He also had a chance to invest in Bell Telephone and Telegraph when they started up business. He felt that Uncle Sam would send a letter anywhere in the country for 3 cents, so why would anyone want to invest in a toy like the telephone."

Varney Family Tree:

- My father Bruce W. Miller’s mother was Harriett Bell (Varney) Miller (1886-1971).
- Harriett Bell (Varney) Miller's brother was Edwin Robert Varney (1881-1943). Her parents were Charles E. Varney (1849-1907) and Emma Merrifield (Lowe) Varney (1864-1954), who were married in 1881. Emma was Charles's second wife.
- Charles E. Varney's first wife was Ida M Brown (1855- 5/22/1880). Their children were Charles Fred (?-1958), Minnie E. (1872-1945), and Saddie (Sarah) (?- 1/12/1879).
- Emma M. (Lowe) Varney's siblings were William (Uncle Will), Charles, and Hattie Pettingill McQuinn (married Herbert William McQuinn). Emma's parents were William Henry Lowe and Louisa (Pettingill).
- Charles M. Varney's siblings were Hiram F. (1849-1931), Helen C. (1855-?), Alonzo M. (1857-1955), and James W. (1867-?). Charles' parents were Robert C. Varney (1823-1901) and Nancy (Morten) Varney (1826 or 29-?). Nancy was Scotch.
- Robert C. Varney's mother was Brigette Varney. Brigette was Irish.
