2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. oil or shortening
1 c. water
1/4 c. dark unsweetened cocoa
1/2 buttermilk or soured milk
2 eggs
1 tsp.. baking soda
1 tsp.. vanilla
Frosting ingredients:
1/2 c. butter
3 T. dark cocoa
1/3 c. milk
1 lb. powdered sugar
1 tsp.. vanilla

Directions:
In a large mixing bowl , combine flour and sugar.
In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening or oil, water and cocoa. Stir and heat to boiling. Pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar in bowl. Add the buttermilk, eggs, soda and vanilla. Mix well.
Pour into a well buttered 17 1/2" x11" x1" pan. Bake at 400º F for 20 minutes or it tests done.
While brownies bake, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan combine the butter, cocoa and milk. Heat to boiling, stirring. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until frosting is smooth. Pour warm frosting over cake as soon as you take it out of the oven. Cool. Cut into 48 bars.
