1 gallon of chunk cucumbers set in salt water that will float an egg for 3 days. Drain off salt water then put alum for 3 days. Then drain and wash pickles. Make a weak vinegar and water solution and simmer for 2 hours. Pour off solution and place in crock and fix:

3 pints vinegar
3 lbs. sugar (6 cups)
½ tsp. of whole allspice
1 tsp. of celery seed
2 sticks of cinnamon

Boil all together and pour over pickles. Allow to stand overnight then reheat for 3 days. On the third day when you heat the solution, have pickles in jars and pour over and seal.
