1/2 c. shortening (Crisco or margarine)
1-1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. applesauce
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. raisins
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening; then add eggs, applesauce, flour and salt. Coat raisins with some flour before adding to mixture. Blend well. Pour batter into a 9x9 loaf pan and sprinkle top of cake with white sugar before baking. Bake at 350 F. for 45-60 minutes.

Note: In addition to raisins, pecans and dates may be added.
