1/2 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup sugar
2 beaten eggs
1 3/4 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla
2 squares melted and cooled chocolate
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 cup sweet or sour milk

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter or shortening and gradually add sugar.
Cream until light, add eggs and mix well.
Add chocolate and blend.
Sift flour once, measure.
Sift flour, salt and soda together.
Add dry ingredients alternately with milk and vanilla.
Pour in 2 greased 8 inch layer pans.
Bake in a moderate oven, 350º F, for about 35 minutes

This is offered In memory of my Mother Ike.
To my recollection Mom was a great cook and enjoyed putting together a robust farm meal.
I can remember her making head cheese, pickling heart and tongue, frying brains, making soap, etc. You didn't waste any part of a pig.
