2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
2 c. granulated sugar
4 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 c. water
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1 stick butter or margarine

Icing:
1 jar marshmallow cream
4 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
6 tbsp. milk
1 stick butter or margarine
1 box confectioner's sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cake:
In a small pan, combine cocoa powder, water, butter or margarine and shortening, bring to a rapid boil. Combine flour and sugar in a bowl and pour boiled mix over them and stir until mixed. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add to mix. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 degrees 25 to 30 minutes.

Icing:
While the cake is hot, spread marshmallow cream over the cake. In a medium pan, combine cocoa, milk and butter or margarine, bring to a boil and remove from heat. Add confectioner's sugar and vanilla to boiled mixture and mix well. Pour over marshmallow cream in a swirled pattern to give it a "muddy" effect. Add chopped nuts if desired.
