2 pkg yeast
2 tsp sugar
1/3 cup water
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup flour

Dissolve yeast according to directions on package. Add the rest of the ingredients and beat until smooth. Cover bowl, put in a warm place and allow to rise until light and bubbly.

Dough 1/2 cup butter or oil
2 eggs
4 egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla
5 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
grated rind of one lemon

Poppy Seed Filling:
1 cup poppy seed
1/4 cup sugar
2 Tbsp honey
1 tsp lemon rind
1 egg white
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Scald poppy seed with boiling water and drain. Let stand for 1 hour then put through the finest blade of food chopper. Add sugar, honey and beaten egg white, and mix well

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat whole eggs, egg yolks and salt until light and fluffy. Combine first mixture and blend well. Stir in lemon rind, vanilla and add yeast mixture. add half of the flour and beat to a smooth batter. Add balance of flour to make a soft dough. Knead thoroughly until smooth, then place in a clean, slightly greased glass bowl and allow to rise until double in bulk. Punch down and let rise again. Roll out on a floured board to a half inch thickness. Cut with round cookie cutter. Place a teaspoon of filling in each piece and seal edges. Allow to rise, then fry in Mazola oil.
