Pastry:
2 cups flour
1 cup shortening
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons water
Mix as regular pastry into a ball and divide into 12 equal portions.

Fruit:
Pare 6 Granny Smith apples and divide into halves (1/2 apple per dumpling).

Dumplings:
Roll each pastry portion into a small circle. Slice 1/2 apple onto the pastry and add small 1/2 pat butter, about 1/2 teaspoon sugar and dash of cinnamon. Fold pastry around the mixture and seal. Place dumplings side by side in baking dish.

Syrup:
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1/8 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Mix and bring to a boil, pour over the dumplings, and bake in 400 degree oven for about 45 minutes, or until apples are tender.

Serve with hot with half and half. I double the syrup just because I like it that way.....lots of juicy sweet crust!
