1 1/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
4 large eggs
3 tablespoons whiskey (Wild Turkey or equivalent)
3 tablespoons poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Spoon batter into a generously buttered 8 inch Springform pan and smooth the top. Bake in the center of the oven for approx. 40 minutes, or until cake pulls away from sides of pan and a toothpick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Turn out onto a wire rack and let cool completely. Just before serving, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. Serves 10-12.

This wonderfully old-fashioned cake keeps fresh in an airtight container for several days and also freezes well. It looks handsome served un-sliced on a cake stand or can be cut into thin pieces and arranged on a plate.
