Ingredients: 3/4 C. shortening 1 C. sugar 2 eggs, beaten 2 Tbsp. milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 1/4 C. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 C. chopped pecans 1 C. chopped dates 1/2 C. maraschino cherries, drained and chopped 21/2 C. corn flake cereal, crushed Garnish: additional maraschino cherries, quartered

Directions:Blend together shortening and sugar until creamy. Add eggs, milk and vanilla; blend well. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture and stir well. Fold in nuts, dates and cherries. Form dough into balls of one level tablespoon per cookie. Roll in cereal. Place on lightly greased baking sheets; press a cherry quarter (aka: the "wink") into the center of each cookie. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool completely; store in an airtight container. Makes 5 dozen. |

Notes: Though this isn't Mom's original recipe, it's still a favorite. A bit of history here: This recipe was born in 1950. Ruth Derousseau of Rice Lake, Wisconsin entered the second Pillsbury Bake-Off, and won Junior First Prize and $5000 - a near fortune back then - with a cookie that took the nation by storm. Modern day recipes call for 1 1/2 sticks of butter (3/4 C.) in the recipe, claiming better flavor.
