Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c. white vinegar
1 c. water
2 sticks of margarine
2 T. salt
1 T. red cayenne pepper
Crushed red pepper to taste

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together in a small pot. Simmer on medium heat for about 5 minutes. Use sauce to baste the meat as it cooks. Because this sauce does not contain sugar, the meat is less likely to burn, but it does need to be basted often while it is cooking.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This recipe likely originated long ago with Maggie's family in Mississippi. All we know is that (red in the face) she used to hover protectively over a hot grill on a hot summer day mopping the pieces of chicken with her cooked sauce. Just before the ordeal of cooking barbecue chicken in the South was finished, she would proclaim, "This is just too much sugar for a dime!" We were always afraid that this declaration meant she would refuse ever to cook it again, but that never happened...the glass of rum and coke she took to in her later years encouraged her along.
