1 3/4 cups flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 cup nuts, chopped
1 1/2 cups maraschino cherries, drained and chopped
(reserve 1/4 cup juice)

Glaze:
1/4 cup butter
1/4 tsp almond extract
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 3/4 - 2 cups icing sugar
1/4 cup maraschino cherry halves

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375. Stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl beat butter with sugar, then beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Stir in cherries and nuts.

Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes. Remove and cool on wire racks.

Glaze: Melt butter in medium sized saucepan. Stir in cocoa until blended. Mix in reserved maraschino juice (may not need all) and almond extract. Beat in icing sugar until glaze is smooth. Frost cooled cookies with glaze and top with 1/3 a maraschino cherry.
