1/2 bushel of cucumbers
Salt
Alum
Vinegar
Sugar
Pickling spices

Directions:
Slice cucumbers 1/2-inch thick. Cover with brine (1 pint salt to 9 cups water) and let stand for 9 days. Pour off brine. Wash thoroughly. Put back in stone jar. Dissolve 1/2 cup powdered alum in enough water to cover. Let stand 48 hours. Use 1 quart vinegar to 6 cups sugar. Add pickling spices tied in thin cloth. Boil 10 minutes. Pour over cucumbers. Reheat and pour over cucumbers each day for 5 days. On the 5th day, put in jars and seal.
