1/2 c shortening
2 sq unsweetened chocolate
1 c sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 c applesauce
1 t vanilla
1 c flour
1/2 t baking powder
1/4 t baking soda
1/4 t salt
1/2 c nuts, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Melt shortening and chocolate over hot water. Blend in sugar, beaten eggs, applesauce, and vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients and stir into above mixture. Fold in nuts. Spread in greased and floured square pan. Bake 35 minutes in moderate oven. Cut in squares.

This recipe is from Darnell Scott. She was my father's (Lawrence Cook) sister. The picture is of the Methodist Church which was built in 1905. The first minister was E. H. Knepp at a salary of $650.00 for 3 charges. This picture and the recipe were part of a 1950 Cook Book compiled by the Benedict Methodist Church Ladies.
