2 cups whole milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 eggs, lightly beaten
12 slices whole wheat bread cut in half cross-wise (I used 9 slices white bread)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 cup golden raisins
2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400º. In a medium bowl, combine milk, vanilla and eggs; whisk until blended. Dip bread into mixture to coat. In a buttered 9x9 inch square glass baking dish, layer 1/3 of the bread onto bottom; drizzle evenly with 1/3 butter, sprinkle with 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar; sprinkle with half the raisins. Repeat layer, going a different direction with the bread. Top with remaining bread, butter and sugar. Sprinkle top evenly with ground cinnamon. Cover and bake 25 minutes. Remove cover; bake 15 minutes.
