"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4 cups sifted flour (scant the measurement)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 lb. butter
(be sure butter is very soft as it works up better!)
1 Tbsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together butter and sugar, then mix in egg and vanilla, followed by the flour a little at a time. Generally have to work flour in by hand at the end, as it gets pretty "stiff".

Put through cookie press in long strips on cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for about 8 minutes. Have to check often as they burn easily. Grease pan for first pan only. While on pan cut them on a diagonal to make diamond shaped. Remove from pan at once.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Marie made these cookies for many occasions. She generally brought them to our house in the same cookie tin. One year she brought the tin on April Fool's Day and we got all excited to eat cookies, but the tin was EMPTY!! Needless to say she had a full batch of cookies in a different tin waiting for us after the joke was over!!
