"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

A few items worth mentioning before making the DELICIOUS CHOLENT

Most people will suggest to soak the beans and barley for a few hours prior to making the cholent.

My wife strongly urges that one use a cooking bag so that the crock pot is easy to clean.

If one chooses to accidentally not use a cooking bag because it is better, the concept of soaking a dirty crock pot overnight and not immediately scrubbing the crock pot is the easiest way to get into a disagreement with your wife.

Scrubbing a dirty crock pot really sucks.

Hearing an already agitated wife say "I told you so" really sucks.

My wife makes me into a better person and it is beyond comprehension that I do not listen to her more often.

On to the recipe!

Place the bones, potatoes, beef, barley, beans, and onion into the crock pot in that particular order.

Season with salt, pepper, and garlic according to preference. Remember you can always add salt.

Go ahead and add more garlic. Be generous with the garlic. If you feel you put too much in, take a deep breath and think about how disappointed Grandma would be if you didn't add more. Add more garlic.

Add water to a little below the top of the pot.

Cover and put on HIGH for at least 6 hours.

Place crock pot on low for another 15-18 hours.

Personal Notes:
Everyone has their own version of this. Some people add paprika, chili powder, ketchup, bbq sauce, or hot sauce.

I say nay!

Let the meat and bones dictate the flavor with the garlic enhancing it. The best Cholent is a fatty Cholent.
