1 cup butter (2 sticks)
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. anise extract
2 tbsp. corn syrup

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:

Cream together wet ingredients. Blend dry ingredients together and add into wet ingredients. Knead dough together (it will be rather stiff). Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Roll sections of dough into 1/2" diameter rope/roll. Slice into 1/4" thick pieces, place 1/2" apart on cookie sheet. Bake at 350º for 7-8 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes then remove from cookie sheet to finish cooling. Keep in tightly-closed container.
