1 loaf day old bread (3-4 cups), cubed
1/2 cup raisins
4 lg eggs
3/4 cup + 2 T sugar
4 cups milk
2 T vanilla
1/4 t nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven 350 degrees
Place cubed bread in buttered baking dish & toss in raisins. Beat eggs and 3/4 cup sugar together until light. Mix in milk, vanilla, & nutmeg. Pour over bread and saturate. Sprinkle remaining sugar on top. Fill large pan with hot water and place pudding dish in the 'water bath'. Place in oven and reduce heat to 325 and bake 45 minutes or until set. Let set for 10 minutes before serving.
Sauce: 1 cup sugar,1/2 cup butter,1 egg,2 t vanilla. Mix and heat until sugar is dissolved. Add 3 or 4 T of bourbon or brandy if desired.

This was my Mom's favorite comfort food. Variations include adding pecans with a little brown sugar or replacing the raisins with chocolate chips and serving it topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
