APPLE CRUMBLE

I first started making this when I would look at the apples on the kitchen table going bad and say they have to be used in some kind of cake or baked goods. Flour is the secret ingredient to thicken up the apples. When they bake they let out juice and when it mixes with the flour, it gets thicker. I used to make just the crumble part for Janine because it was her favorite part and she would’t eat the apples. You can use other fruits: peach, plum, blueberry.

Here is a Yiddish word you should know:

Chazerai: pig food, junk food. “We rarely ate chazerai in our family. We were not fans of processed foods. Our only transgression into chazerai was potato chips.”
