1/2 c. Shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs

1 oz. red food color
2 Tbsp. cocoa
--------------------------
1 c. Buttermilk
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla
-------------------------------
1 T. vinegar
1 tsp. soda

Icing:
1 c. milk
3 Tbsp. Flour
------------------------
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs.
Make a paste of food color and cocoa. Add to creamed mixture.
Add buttermilk alternately with dry ingredients and vanilla.
Mix soda and vinegar in a bowl (It will foam) Add vinegar and soda to other mixture - blend DO NOT BEAT

Bake @ 350º 24-30 min.

Icing:
Cook milk and flour over medium heat until thick. Set aside until cool.

Beat butter and sugar on high speed for 7 minutes. Add cooled custard 1 Tbsp. at a time (med. speed) Beat until like whipped cream. Add vanilla. Turn on high speed and beat at least 3 minutes more.

Frost cooled cake.
