1 1/2 sticks butter (12 Tbsp.)
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup warm water
1 pkg. yeast (scant Tbsp.)
1 egg
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
4 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup raisins optional
Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbsp. melted butter
water or milk to make desired consistency for piping

Directions:

Dissolve yeast in the warm water with a pinch of sugar. Beat wet ingredients to combine with 2 cups of the flour,salt,sugar,and cinnamon for 2 minutes. Add the rest of the flour and mix by hand or with dough hook on mixer for 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl and let rise at least an hour. Punch down and rest it 10 minutes. Pull off egg sized pieces of dough with floured hands and roll into ball. Place in greased 13x9 or muffin tins. Let rise 30 minutes more. Brush with an egg wash of one egg yolk beaten with 1 teas. water. Bake 20 minutes or until brownish around edges. Cool. Add glaze to pastry bag or large plastic baggie with corner clipped. Pipe a cross + on each bun to remind us that our Lord died for us.

Hot cross buns, hot cross buns! one a penny, two a penny hot cross buns! I make these ahead, freeze the dough, then thaw in fridge the night before and bake in the morning. Don't forget to keep the fast this day and go to services or stations.
