1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup margarine, softened
1 egg, separated
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup chopped nuts
jelly (your choice of flavor but a red and green are nice for Christmas cookies.)

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350º. Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, egg yolk and vanilla. Mix in flour and salt until dough holds together. Shape dough into one inch balls.
Beat egg white slightly. Dip each ball into egg white; roll in nuts. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Press thumb deeply in center of each. Bake until light brown, about 10 minutes. Cool and fill with jelly.
