2 cups flour
3 Tbsp. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup raisins
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. caraway seeds (optional)
1 egg, beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in butter to resemble course meal. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds if desired. Add buttermilk, blending to moisten dry ingredients. Turn dough onto floured board, knead for several minutes until smooth. Form dough into round ball and place on greased baking sheet. Flatten ball slightly. Brush top and sides with beaten egg. Cut a 1/2 inch deep cross on top of bread. Bake in a 375º oven for 30 to 40 minutes. Brush with butter. Cool.
Makes one round loaf.
