1/2 c. butter
1 1/4 c. white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. cocoa
1/3 c. boiling water
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
Directions:
Directions:
Mix butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs and mix well. Mix cocoa and boiling water until smooth along with vanilla. Sift flour, salt, and soda together. Mix half flour mixture with half buttermilk and beat well, add remaining flour mixture till smooth.

For variation- add marschino cherries and walnuts to flour before putting into cake. Mix cocoa with boiling cherry juice. Bake longer - like fruit cake.
Put in greased pan and bake at 375º for 20-25 minutes
