¾ pound Dromedary pitted dates
¼ cup margarine or butter, softened
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/3 cup water
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 cup packed brown sugar
1¾ cups all purpose flour
¼ cup shortening
¼ teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Chop or snip dates into small pieces. Cook dates, granulated sugar, and water in a saucepan, stirring constantly, until thickened; cool. Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, egg and vanilla until smooth. Stir in flour and salt. Divide dough into halves. Roll each half into rectangle, 11 x 7 inches, on waxed paper. Spread ½ of the date mixture on each rectangle. Roll up tightly, beginning at 11-inch side. Pinch edge of roll to seal. Wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours. Cut rolls into ¼ inch slices. Place about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees until light brown, about 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
