Ingredients:
Ingredients:
5 slices white bread
4 tablespoons softened butter
1/2 cup raisins
1 teaspoon (or more) cinnamon
3 cups milk
2/3 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly butter a shallow 8x8x2-inch baking dish. Butter bread slices generously with the butter. Cut each slice into 1 inch squares. Sprinkle raisins over the bottom of the prepared baking dish then arrange bread squares, buttered side up, over raisins. Sprinkle with the cinnamon.

Heat the milk for three minutes on high in the microwave. Add sugar, stirring until it is dissolved.

In a large bowl, beat eggs; stir in hot milk mixture, then add vanilla. Pour over bread in baking dish. Set baking dish in a larger baking pan then add about 1/2 to 1 inch of very hot water to the larger pan.

Bake at 350° for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Remove baking dish from the water and let cool for about 15 minutes before serving. It’s fine on its own or with ice cream or a rum sauce on top.

Aunty Claire: What I remember that your Grandma Squire made is bread pudding. I expect that, like most people, she liked it because it didn’t use exotic ingredients and, even better, it used up stale bread. If you happened to have ice cream to dollop on top, what joy!
The story that I remember connected with this dessert concerned her coming home and finding the pudding that she had made for dessert half eaten. All three sons assured her that the dog, Skipper, had eaten it. But she, a true mother, had the last word as she said, “With a spoon!!”
