6 c. flour
2 t. Davis baking powder
1/4 t. yeast
1 t. salt
1 T. Crisco or 2 T. oil
warm water

Directions:
Directions:
Combine ingredients with enough warm to make a dough. Cover; let rise and shape into 3 inch rounds. You can put the dough in the fridge overnight and fry in the morning.

Fry in heavy pan just barely covered with oil. Heat pan on 4. Reduce to 2 when you start frying them to a golden brown. (If you don't have an electric stove. Heat pan on a medium high heat and reduce to medium.)

I can still see my father, William Reynold Bradshaw making bakes in our huge cast iron frying pan, which I wish I still had, burning them because he couldn't regulate the gas. I have days where I burn everything and think of my beloved Dad! My Aunt Elizabeth Bradshaw once said to me,"Mary, you should know how to make bakes by now!" I still don't (R.I.P.
