1/2 c. softened butter or margarine
1/2 c. solid vegetable shortening
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla
5 c. sifted confectioners sugar
3 T. milk

Directions:
Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and shortening. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time. Beat well on medium speed, scaping sides and bottom of bowl often. When all of the sugar has been mixed in, the icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered with damp cloth until ready to frost or decorate.

This icing dyes well with only a few drops of food coloring for decorating and piping.
