"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

Directions:
Dissolve yeast in 3/4 cups water. Stir in 2 2/3 cups warm water, the sugar, shortening, and 5 cups of the flour. Beat until smooth. Mix in enough remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.

Turn dough onto lightly floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place in warm bowl. Cover. Let rise in warm place until doubled in size. (Dough is ready if impression remains.) Punch down and put in bread pan or make rolls.

Heat oven to 425º. Place loaves or rolls in oven and bake for about 30-35 minutes. Bread will be golden brown and loaves will sound hollow.
