1-1/2 cups warm water, 1 pkg dry yeast
1-1/2 tsp salt 1 T soft shortening
! T sugar 3-1/2 cups flour

Cornstarch Glaze
In small saucepan, Mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 1 tsp cold water.
Combine with 1/2 cup boiling water.
Cook until smooth. Set aside.

Measure water into a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast and sugar on top and stir until dissolved.
Add salt, and shortening. Mix thoroughly. Stir in flour.
Turn dough out on slightly floured pastry sheet.
Knead 8 to 10 minutes, or until dough is springy and does not stick to sheet.
Grease the large bowl, and place dough back into it. Brush top with shortening.
Cover with cloth. Let rise until double in bulk (about 40 min). Punch down.
Let rise again until double in bulk (30 min.) Punch down, turn out on floured
pastry sheet. Cut dough into two equal portions.
Roll each half into an oblong square (8 x 10 in)
Beginning with the wide side roll up tightly. Seal edges by pinching together
with hands on each end of roll. Roll gently back and forth to lengthen loaf,
and taper ends. Repeat with second portion.
Place loaves on a greased baking sheet or in french bread pans.(a pan will
hold two loaves)
Sprinkle lightly with yellow corn meal.
Brush loaves with corn starch glaze.
Let rise, uncovered, about 1-1/2 hours.
Brush again with cornstarch glaze. With a sharp knife, make l/4 in slashes
in loaves at 2 in intervals.
Bake at 400, for 10 minutes.
Remove from oven, brush again with glaze
Return to oven, and bake until light brown (15 - 20 min)
