6 c. water
1/3 c. kidney beans, dry
1 lb. Portuguese sausage
1 lb. beef, cubed
2/3 c. split peas, dry
2 1/2 tsp. salt
6 c. kale, corsely chopped
2 c. potatoes, cubed
2 c. cabbage, corsely chopped

Directions:
Directions:
In a large pot, combine the water and kidney beans. Boil uncovered for 5 minutes, remove from heat, cover and let stand 1 hour.

Brown the beef and sausage. Add the meat and the split peas to the beans. Simmer uncovered for 2-3 hours until the beans are tender.

Add the cut up kale, cabbage, and potatoes. Simmer an additional 30 minutes.

This was a dish that Edith Ahlers remembers growing up with. Her mother, Edith Mack learned to make it from her Portuguese father Severino Silva in Rhode Island. It is a common soup in Rhode Island today.
