1 onion
1/2 head cabbage chopped
1 jar sauerkraut
caraway seed
salt
pepper
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
3 Tablespoons juice from meat

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
2 slices cubed bread (may be toasted)

Sauerkraut:
Chop one onion and then brown in 1 Tablespoon shortening. Add ½ head of cabbage that has been chopped up. Put lid on and cook slowly for about ½ to 45 minutes until it is thoroughly browned. Take jar of sauerkraut and pour in a strainer, rinse and drain, then cover with water and boil for ½ hour. Drain very well. Mix together the cabbage and sauerkraut. Add pepper, caraway, and salt to taste. Add 2 Tablespoons brown sugar, 3 Tablespoons of juice from meats. Simmer for one hour, check for seasoning.
Dumplings:
Mix flour, baking powder, salt, egg, milk and cubed bread all together and knead into one oblong dumpling, about 8 inches. Let rest one hour under a covered dish towel. Place in boiling water and boil 10 minutes in a covered pan. Turn over and boil another 10 minutes. Remove from water and cut into slices with a string or knife.
Place slices of dumpling on a plate, cover with sauerkraut and serve.
