1 c. plus 1 T. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. pitted dates, chopped fine
1 1/4 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. unsalted butter, softened
3/4 c. sugar
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

Toffee Sauce:
1/2 c. unsalted butter
1/2 c. heavy cream
1 c. packed light brown sugar

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Butter a pie plate or 6 custard cups. In a small bowl, pour boiling water over chopped dates and let soak. Sift together flour and baking powder. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and blend well. Gradually blend in flour mixture. Add date mixture and fold in gently. Pour into prepared dish(es) and bake until set and firm on top, about 35 minutes (less for custard cups).

Toffee Sauce:
Combine butter, heavy cream and brown sugar in saucepan and heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil gently over medium heat until mixture is thickened, about 8 minutes. Preheat broiler. When ready to serve, spoon about 1/3 of sauce over top of cake(s) and place under broiler until topping is bubbly, about 1 minute. Serve immediately and drizzle with additional toffee sauce.
