2 cups all purpose flour
2/3 cup butter or margarine
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ¼ cups sugar
½ teaspoon baking soda
3 eggs, separated
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup sour cream
Grated peel of 1 lemon

Lemony Frosting
½ cup butter or margarine, softened
3 cup icing sugar
Grated lemon peel of ½ a lemon
2 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350˚F. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, with electric mixer, cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolks one at a time; beat until light in colour. Add flour mixture alternately with sour cream, beating just until smooth. With clean beaters, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold beaten egg whites and lemon peel onto batter. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350˚F for 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

In a medium bowl cream together butter and 1 cup icing sugar, add lemon peel, lemon juice and remaining 2 cups sugar; beat until smooth.
