5 eggs separated
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1 heaping teaspoon baking powder (I use 1 1/2 tsp.)
1 c. sugar for meringue
1 c. chopped nuts
Meringue (see directions)
Filling: whipped cream or vanilla pudding.

Grease two 8" round cake pans. Line the bottoms with wax paper.
Beat egg yolks in a small bowl. In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Stir together the flour and baking powder. Add to creamed mixture. Fold in egg yolks. Pour into prepared pans.
Beat the egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 1 c. sugar beating until stiff peaks form. Spread meringue over batter. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 350º for 20-30 min. or until cake is done and meringue is golden. Remove from pans leaving nut side up. Cool completely.

Stack layers filling between layers with whipped cream or vanilla pudding.
