Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2/3 cup milk
4 to 6 T. butter for skillet

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, and sugar. Cut in shortening with two knives or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in center and pour milk in all at once. Stir only until dough follows fork around bowl. Turn out on lightly floured surface; knead gently 1/2 minute. Pat or roll dough 3/4 inch thick. Rolling pin should be dusted with flour. Cut dough into rectangle or square generous serving-size pieces. Set temperature of electric skillet at 300 degrees and melt 3 T. butter. When butter starts to sizzle place biscuits in skillet. They can be fairly close together. Put lid on skillet. Skillet-bake biscuits about 8 minutes on each side, adding butter as necessary. The skillet should never be dry. Each side should be a dark golden brown. If they don't bake long enough they will be doughy inside. Serve hot with warm apple butter.

I have warm memories of Grandma's fried bread with warm apple butter for breakfast. I made this many times when the Beuoy family was visiting Vermont. And if you're lucky enough to have any leftover, simply wrap in foil and warm in oven. It's still good the next day. Delicious!
