1 1/4 c. milk, scalded
1/2 c. shortening
1/3 c. white sugar
5 scant cups flour ( sifted before measuring)
1 tsp salt
1 cake yeast ( Fleischman)
2 eggs well beaten
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tbsp orange rind, grated

Combine milk, shortening, sugar and salt, cool to lukewarm, mix yeast in this mixture. And beaten eggs, orange juice, orange rind. Beat thoroughly. Add flour; mix to soft dough, let stand for 10 minutes, covered. Knead well on board. Place in greased bowl, let rise in place that is about 82 degrees until double in bulk. Takes about 2 hours. Then roll out into1/2 inch thick on a lightly floured board. Cut into 10 in strips that are about 1/2 in wide. Tie each into a knot and arrange on a greased baking pan. Cover with a dish towel and let rise until double in size. Bake in oven 400 degrees for 15 min. While hot, spread orange topping. Make by blending together 2 tbsp of orange juice, add orange rind and 1cup of powered sugar.

When I was a child I used to go visit my Grandma Sooy in Havre Montana. She always had four items baked and stored in the freezer ready for our visit: cake donuts, maple sticks, sugar cookies, and orange bow knots. Adding these recipes brings back such fond memories of visiting Grandma!
