fresh Okra *or substitute sliced yellow squash or green tomatoes
milk
cornmeal
flour
salt
pepper
oil

Directions:
Directions:
Slice fresh okra about ½ inch thick. Mix cornmeal, flour, salt and pepper. Dip okra into milk, then into cornmeal mixture. Heat oil at least ½ inch deep until hot over med-hi heat in a large skillet until hot. Scatter okra, fry until crisp and turn (or stir as you go) until brown on all sides. Remove with slotted spoon or spatula and drain on paper towels.

Variation:
Use sliced yellow squash or sliced green tomatoes

My mama (Sue) died 2 months ago. I have the greatest memories sitting with Mom reviewing her recipes to make this cookbook. At one point Mom told me to remove some of her recipes, feeling they weren't 'good enough' compared to some of the fancier recipes. I assured her that capturing what she did was the whole point of this cookbook, passing it down to the next generations. As I'm reviewing the 'most popular' recipes in this cookbook so gratified to see this is one of them. You just can't mess with good southern family style cooking. And I'm here to tell you as an avowed okra hater that anything is good fried...
