1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. baking soda
2 T cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 1/4 c. cake flour sifted twice
1 tsp. vanilla
1 T. vinegar

Icing
2 T. cocoa
1 c. water
1 c. sugar
1 c. butter melted
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa, then add to mixture. Mix in salt and flour alternately with butter milk. Mix soda and vinegar together then fold into mixture. Pour batter into 3 8" greased and floured pans. Bake in preheated oven at 350º for 30-35 minutes

Icicle Frosting
Cook cornstarch and water until thick. Set aside to cool. Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla. Beat until consistency of whipping cream.
