2 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
2 eggs
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 - 10 oz jar maraschino cherries
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

FOR FROSTING
1 tbsp butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
Reserved cherry liquid

With a pastry blender (or potato masher) mix flour, granulated sugar and butter until crumbly. Press mixture into an ungreased 13 X 9 pan. Bake at 350º (325º if using glass pan) for 25 to 30 minutes, or until crust is lightly browned.

Blend together eggs, brown sugar, salt, baking powder and vanilla. Drain cherries, reserving cherry liquid for frosting. Chop cherries, you should have about 1/3 cup. Stir chipped cherries and walnuts into egg mixture. Spread on top of baked crust. Return to oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool in pan.

FROSTING
Combine butter and powdered sugar with about 3 tbsp cherry liquid to make a spreading consistency (adjust liquid to sugar to desired consistency). Use to frost cooled cookies in pan.

When frosting has set, cut into squares.
