1/2 C sifted all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 C quick cooking rolled oats
1/2 C brown sugar
6 T butter, melted
1 square unsweetened chocolate, melted (1 oz)
4 T butter, melted
3/4 C granulated sugar
1 egg
2/3 C sifted all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 C milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 C chopped walnuts
1 square unsweetened chocolate (1 oz)
2 T butter
1 1/2 C sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 T hot water

For bottom layer: Sift together the 1/2 C flour, the soda, and 1/4 tsp. salt; mix with rolled oats and the brown sugar. Stir in 6 T melted butter. Pat mixture in 11x7x1 1/2 inch baking pan; bake in 350º oven 10 minutes

For middle layer: Combine chocolate, 4 T melted butter, and the granulated sugar; add egg and beat well. Sift together 2/3 C flour, baking powder, and 1/4 tsp. salt; add alternately with milk and vanilla to chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Spread batter over baked layer. Return to oven and bake at 350º 25 minutes.

For top layer: Place chocolate and butter in small saucepan. Stir over low heat till chocolate melts. Remove from heat; add powdered sugar and vanilla. Blend in enough hot water to make almost pourable consistency. Spread over baked brownies. Let cool, cut into 16 large brownies.
