2 lbs Italian sausage
2 C dry red wine
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 C finely chopped onion
1 16 oz can tomatoes, cut up
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. granulated sugar
1 C water
1 medium head cabbage, coarsely chopped

Using fork, prick sausage casing several times. Cut sausage into 3 inch pieces. Place sausage in large mixing bowl; add wine and garlic powder. Set aside; marinate 30 minutes. Drain sausage; reserve marinade. In large saucepan cook sausage and onion till meat is browned and onion is tender. Add the reserved marinade. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Stir in undrained tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar, water and cabbage. Cover and simmer 20 minutes more, stirring occasionally. Serve in soup bowls.
