Personal Notes:
My grandmother's cousin, Mame Coyne, got this recipe from my great grandmother who brought it over from Ireland. When my parents were engaged, my mother asked Mame for the recipe. When Mame dictated the part about "an egg-sized piece of shortening", my mother said "a large or small egg?" , Mame replied, "Poor John". We had this on St Patrick's Day and left a slice for Santa on Christmas Eve.
