2 cups sugar for each 1 cup water to make syrup (to allow apples to float as they cook, in a large pan)

1 bottle red food coloring

6 (or more) York apples, peeled and cored (may substitute Granny Smiths)

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the sugar and water in a large saucepan and bring it just to a simmer.

Set the apples in gently. As they cook and soak up the colored syrup, turn them for even cooking.

When done, remove them to a plate with a slotted spoon. Cool before serving.
