1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
7 cups milk
4 egg yolks, beaten
1/4 cup butter, softened
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 package (12 oz.) vanilla wafers
9 medium ripe bananas, peeled and sliced

Directions:
1. combine sugar, flour, and cornstarch in a mixing bowl. Mix well and set aside.
2. Pour milk into a large saucepan, cook over medium heat until candy thermometer registers 160 º F,
3. Gradually stir one-fourth of the hot milk into the egg yolks. Stir them into the dry ingredients, and add to the remaining hot milk.
4. Cook stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and coats the spoon. Remove from heat. Add vanilla.
5. Let cool to room temperature. Line the bottom of a 13x9x2 inch baking dish with 1/3 of the vanilla wafers.
6. Arrange half the banana slices over the top of the wafers. Top with half the cooled custard. Repeat.
7. Chill thoroughly. Beat the egg whites to make a meringue, and spread it over the top. Run it under the broiler to brown. Serve
