6 egg whites
salt
2 cups of sugar
2 teaspoons of vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix egg whites, salt and sugar until stiff. Add vinegar and vanilla. Continue to beat until firm. Grease form- Bake in 300º oven for 1 1/2 hours. Test with straw like cake.

The straw test above, I presume, is referring to what we now call The Toothpick Test. If an inserted toothpick comes out of the cake (or meringue) clean and dry the cake is done.
