Sweet bread-- Tootsie
Ingredients:
2 cups milk 1 cup sugar
2 TBS dry yeast 2 eggs and 1 egg yolk
1 tsp. salt 8 cups flour
1 tsp. cardamom 1 cup margarine
1/2 cup warm water

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in milk, sugar, salt, cardamom, eggs, and enough flour to make a batter (about 2 cups). Beat until dough is smooth and elastic. Add 3 cups flour and beat well. Add melted butter and stir. Beat until dough looks glossy. Stir in remaining flour until stiff dough forms. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured board and cover. Let rest for 15 minutes. Knead until smooth and satiny. Place in a lightly greased mixing bowl, loosely covered, and allow dough to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size. Punch it down with your fist and let it rise again until almost doubled (about 30 minutes). Turn out onto a lightly floured board and divide into 3 parts. Divide each part into 3 more parts. Shape each part into a strip about 16 inches long by rolling between your palms and the board. Braid strips together to form 3 braided loaves. Place braids on a slightly greased cookie sheet and let rise for 20 minutes (until braids are fluffy, but not doubled in size). Glaze loaves with beaten egg whites and sprinkle with red and/or green sugar (for the holidays) and sliced almonds. You may also slice maraschino cherries and put on top. Bake at 400 for 25-30 minutes. Do not overbake or loaves will become very dry.
